About Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls known by the local people as "Mosi oa-Tunya" ("the smoke that thunders") is positioned almost exactly half way along the mighty Zambezi River's 2700 km journey from its source to the sea.

Here the river plunges headlong into a 108 meter vertical chasm spanning the full 1700 meter width of the river, creating the biggest curtain of falling water in the world and also one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Twice as high and one and half times as wide as Niagara Falls with their beauty possibly matched only by the Iguazu Falls in South Brazil.

In November 1855 Dr David Livingstone was transported in a dugout canoe by the local Makalolo people to the very edge of these falls. The sensitive Scotsman was so overwhelmed by his first sight of these spectacular falls, that he momentarily abandoned his scientific observations and recorded.

"It has never been seen before by European eyes, but scenes so wonderful must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight"

Today these Falls attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year not only to witness this unsurpassed natural wonder and revel in its outstanding beauty but also to enjoy the many activities and attractions located nearby. Magnificent game parks, amongst the finest Africa has to offer, are within an hours’ drive and just about every conceivable form of adventure activity is available hence why it is also known as “The Adventure Capital of Africa”. It is also a popular destination for weddings, conferences and team building events.

Victoria Falls is close to where the four countries of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia meet making it the obvious hub of this region and the perfect place to base oneself in order to explore the entire area. The building of the new Victoria Falls international airport which will facilitate direct international flights is testimony to this fact.

Surrounded by thousands of square kilometres of virgin bush the tourist town of Victoria Falls and Livingstone in Zambia have grown and blossomed over the years. Luxury hotels, upmarket safari lodges, back-packers lodges and everything in between have been built to accommodate the ever increasing number of tourists
